연희에게선 몇 주째 연락이 없다.
그동안 연희는 격주로 자취방을 다녀갔었던 것 같다.
왜 굳이 격주로 다녀갔던 걸까?
처음으로 이런 의문을 가져본다는 게 우습다.
하긴 우리의 만남엔 빈 구석들이 너무 많았다.
보통의 연인들이 겪게되는 사소한 경험의 많은 부분들도
우리는 나눠갖지 못했다.

처음으로 나는 연희가 남기고 간 앨범을 보고 있다.
그동안 그녀는 틈틈히 사진을 찍고
앨범을 만들었지만 난 별로 관심이 없었다.
아니, 그저 위험스럽고 어리석은 일 정도로 생각했었다.
사진에서 만큼은 그녀도 나도 한없이 행복해 보인다.
하지만 우리는 그 길을 가지 않았다.

이제 나는 어렴풋이 알 것 같다.
그녀가 왜 이런 앨범을 만들었는지,
그리고 그녀가 내게 끝내 하지 못한 말이 무엇이었는지를.

사랑이라는 복잡다양한 감정의 소용돌이속에서 평온할 수 없다는 것은
인간이라는 불완전한 존재임을 증명하는 가장 확실한 증거이다.

불과 몇 분 앞의 미래를 알지 못하는 우리지만
그 불확실한 미래에 대한 약간의 희망을 품고서
끊임없이 누군가와 관계를 맺으려는 시도를 일삼는다.

그 여자는 그를 사랑했을까?
사랑한다는 말을 끝내 하고 싶었을까?
이제는 입에 담기조차 조금은 씁쓸해져 버린 그 단어앞에서
몇십년을 살아왔어도 채워지지 않을 외로움과
그 외로움을 채울수 있을 거라는 가망없는 기대 사이에서
그에게 무슨 말을 해야 했을까?

마음에도 땀이 날 만큼 더운 여름날 밤이다.
